Our Story

Structure before story.

A letter from the founder

I have always believed that African real assets deserve better institutional discipline.

I have been the sceptical reader myself: the would-be investor sitting across a desk, asking how a scheme was structured, and leaving without an answer.

Too many people have encountered structures where the story was easier to understand than the underlying arrangement. Promises were made before foundations were laid. Questions about governance, counterparties, reporting and accountability went unanswered.

This has produced a rational scepticism around African real assets.

We did not take that reading on instinct. Before building HFN we researched the market, in conversations and in numbers, and both said the same thing. Trust is low. People need to see more before they commit.

I do not believe that scepticism should be dismissed. It should be answered.

I do not believe that scepticism should be dismissed. It should be answered.

I do not believe that scepticism should be dismissed. It should be answered.

That is the thinking behind HFN. Start with the asset. Establish the structure. Put proper governance around it. Work with counterparties of institutional standing. Make the relevant information clear. Then let the facts speak for themselves.

We are starting in Lagos, because it is the market we know and can defend, and because it has proven itself. Excellent construction alone does not solve the problem. It takes governance in the widest sense: of the board, of the construction itself, of each project, with independent oversight and the technology to keep all of it visible.

The first expression of this approach is taking shape on Victoria Island, Lagos: a physical asset being developed.

The ambition is larger than any single development: real assets held to this standard, and the discipline to say what is known, what is not yet known, and what should not be said until it can be established.

There is no shortage of ambition in African real estate. What the market needs are institutions prepared to carry that ambition with discipline. That is what we are building.
